Who is Da Brat you ask?  Well, she is the first female rapper to ever achieve a platinum-selling album status in 1994, and Funkdafied was the album that got her that status.  Her producer, Jermaine Dupri, cultivated her as a “female Snoop Dogg” as she poured out with her top singles “Funkdafied“, and “Give It 2 You” which started her off at #1 on the Billboard Rap Album chart .  After that, her own music career remained low-key while she ventured into other realms of the entertainment industry.

Between 1996 and 1999, Brat was featured in numerous other albums.  Artists including Missy Elliot, Ludacris, Destiny’s Child, Lil’ Kim, TLC all worked alongside the rappette.  Mariah Carey not only featured her on a couple songs, but also in her 2001 flop, Glitter.  Although, I’m positive Da Brat had nothing to do with that failure.  Shaq also acted (if you wanna call it acting) alongside Brat in Kazaam; another epic film.

Later in 2000, Brat finally got back to her own work and released her third album, Unrestricted, which gave birth to “What Chu Like“, and featured a fresh-imaged Brat and Tyrese in the music video, rolling around naked on a beach.  In 2003, Brat released a new album, “Limelight, Luv & Nightclubz” and starred on the fourth season of VH1’s The Surreal Life.

Brat continued appearing as guests on albums, and also appeared on the fifth season of VH1’s Celebrity Fit Club, up until October of 2007 when she struck a woman in the face with a bottle, and was sentenced to three years in prison, seven years probation and 200 hours of community service.  Will we see a return to music when Da Brat is released in less than a year or will she continue her face-whacking shenanigans?  Only time will tell.
