What Ever Happened to… Boyz II Men?

Boyz II Men was a school dance staple back in elementary.  The dance was not complete if they didn’t play “End of the Road” or “On Bended Knee” at the end to let everyone know that the dance was coming to an end.  It seemed like they were at the top of their game but what ever happened to Boyz II Men?

As of late, Boyz II Men have been gearing up for a worldwide tour to promote their last album, Love which was released late 2009.  And although, BIIM have been putting out albums consistently almost every two years or so, it seems like they dropped off the radar.  After the massive success of the 1992’s “Boomerang” Film Soundtrack which featured BIIM’s “End of the Road“, the quartet quickly reissued their first album, Cooleyhighharmony, with the popular track added as a bonus.

1994, their second album II, was–in my opinion–what made them.  Hits like “On Bended Knee”, “I’ll Make Love to You”, and “Water Runs Dry” all went to the top of the charts, selling 12 million copies.  “I’ll Make Love to You” went on to break the record of 13 weeks at the number-1 spot, by replacing BIIM’s own “End of the Road” with “I’ll Make Love to You”, a record that was matched only by Whitney Houston’s cover of “I Will Always Love You” that same year.  In 1995, they went on to win two awards at the Grammys.  They were on top of the world.

In 1997, after the release of The Remix Collection, BIIM released their third, Evolution, to mixed reviews, selling only 3 million copies compared to II’s 12 million, and Cooleyhighharmony‘s 9 million.

Between 1999 and 2009, the Boyz went through rough times, including different labels, failed albums, and the loss of a member due to back problmes.  Though, as mentioned before, BIIM is on tour now, appearing in our home town of LA in March at Nokia Live!.

In December 2009, the three remaining Boyz, announced that they would be releasing a new album in 2011, featuring all four of the original members.  On January 10th, 2010, an announcement was made on the official Boyz II Men website that the fourth member, Michael McCary would not be rejoining due to him requesting too much money.

And so the story of Boyz II Men, apparently, goes on…

Yes, great memories. But an artist can only do covers for so long…

Their latest album, Love, has a great track list of others’ songs. I want to fall in love with BIIM just as I did when I was a kid. Now that I’m older and wiser, I realize that it’s their original stuff I loved. Bring it back Boyz!

    P.S. Whatever happened to Babyface!?
