Some people can do it, but for others its impossible.

Considering a member of the opposite sex a best friend, is it:

A. sexual attraction

B. emotional attraction

C. Both A and B

As this is my very first post on this blog, I’ve decided to make it about something I really care about. As in, something that I hear about often and it never fails to grind my beans. It has to do with the T.V. shows we watch, the movies we go to see, and why we see them.

Let’s start with T.V. Shows. Earlier today, before heading off to class, a friend of mine informed me that “Supernatural”, a personal favorite T.V. show of mine, was in danger of being canceled at the end of this Spring. Not wanting to give any validity to what she was saying, I quickly looked online and found articles from late 2009, which all stated that the show had not yet been picked up for a 6th season. Why? Presumably low ratings and a high cost to produce the show.

This ties into my main point. T.V. Shows are not saved because they are good. They are saved because they get high ratings and bring in money for the company who sponsors it. Take the new hit T.V. Show on Fox, “Glee”. This show costs $3,000,000 an episode to produce, and is filmed over the course of 11-14 days. However, Fox has given the show another 8 episodes to complete it’s first season and another full-term 22 episode second season, with high hopes for a third. If my math is right, the producers of “Glee” have the chance to spend another $90,000,000 between now and early 2011 to continue it’s show, and they can do this because Fox is counting on an equal return in ratings due to the success of the first 13 episodes of Season 1.

Why Do Men Cheat?

I’ve come across a question the burns inside many women’s minds, why do men cheat? The universal answer most women end up at is men are dogs! Psychology has taught us men are driven to cheat by hormones, availability, and upbringing. Women on the other hand cheat due to emotional neglect, and the need for emotional intimacy. In our modern society, the percentage of cheating women is rising, but I will delve further into that pool on my next blog.

The laws of nature and nurture, in concert with past relationships all contribute to a man’s desire to cheat. On the side of nature we have high testosterone levels making for a higher sex drive, the need for risk taking, higher aggression levels, and competitiveness, a phenomenon that has been documented in labs as well as in athletes. Some men have lower levels of Monoamine Oxidase A, which regulates the brain’s levels of dopamine, the pleasure neurotransmitter, creating what’s called “Sensation Seekers.” Sensation seekers crave intense experiences more than other people do. They often have energetic personalities, and yearn for new and intense experiences to negate boredom.

What do dreams mean?  Are your dreams trying to tell you something? “Dream” is defined in Webster’s Dictionary as a “sequence of sensations, images, thoughts, etc., passing through a sleeping person’s mind” . Dreams have been a topic of study dating back to 4000 B.C.  One may say that dreams have been around as long as the first civilization came to be and are just a normal part of human existence.

This is NOT good...

I know most of you have had the “chase” dream, or how about the “falling” dream.  Others may have dreamed that they were flying or that they were naked.  These are some common dreams that people have.  I know I’ve definitely had the falling dream, and the chasing dream where you are moving in absolute slow-motion.

In our dreams, we can go anywhere, we can be anybody, and we can do anything.  When we dream, we are like passengers on a moving train, unable to control our actions and choose surroundings.  We let our mind take over.   Sometimes, dreams can be understood in the the context of repressed thoughts. Dreaming serves as an outlet for those thoughts and impulses we repress during the day. When we go to sleep at night and slip into our dream state, we feel liberated and behave and act in a manner that we do not allow ourselves in our waking life.
