The History of St. Valentine

Every February, across the country, candy, flowers, and gifts are exchanged between loved ones, all in the name of St. Valentine. But who is this mysterious saint and why do we celebrate this holiday? The history of Valentine’s Day — and its patron saint — is shrouded in mystery. But we do know that February has long been a month of romance. St. Valentine’s Day, as we know it today, contains vestiges of both Christian and ancient Roman tradition. So, who was Saint Valentine and how did he become associated with this ancient rite? Today, the Catholic Church recognizes at least three different saints named Valentine or Valentinus, all of whom were martyred.

One legend contends that Valentine was a priest who served during the third century in Rome. When Emperor Claudius II decided that single men made better soldiers than those with wives and families, he outlawed marriage for young men — his crop of potential soldiers. Valentine, realizing the injustice of the decree, defied Claudius and continued to perform marriages for young lovers in secret. When Valentine’s actions were discovered, Claudius ordered that he be put to death.

Tiffany Brissette, who played the familiar, character pretty much fell off the face of the planet after 1991.  After Small Wonder (1985-1989), she ended up playing a part in one episode of Parker Lewis Can’t Lose, another underrated show who must of us would remember if we saw a commercial for.  She then played a few episodes in a show called Equal Justice.  After that, she went AWOL.   The picture above is one of her more recently, but as far as acting goes, she’s a no-go.  Tiffany will be 36 years old this December.  Small Wonder: The Complete First Season will be released on DVD for this first time,  Tuesday, February 16.  Would make a great (late) Valentine’s Day gift for that special nostalgic someone in your life!

Why Do Men Cheat?

I’ve come across a question the burns inside many women’s minds, why do men cheat? The universal answer most women end up at is men are dogs! Psychology has taught us men are driven to cheat by hormones, availability, and upbringing. Women on the other hand cheat due to emotional neglect, and the need for emotional intimacy. In our modern society, the percentage of cheating women is rising, but I will delve further into that pool on my next blog.

The laws of nature and nurture, in concert with past relationships all contribute to a man’s desire to cheat. On the side of nature we have high testosterone levels making for a higher sex drive, the need for risk taking, higher aggression levels, and competitiveness, a phenomenon that has been documented in labs as well as in athletes. Some men have lower levels of Monoamine Oxidase A, which regulates the brain’s levels of dopamine, the pleasure neurotransmitter, creating what’s called “Sensation Seekers.” Sensation seekers crave intense experiences more than other people do. They often have energetic personalities, and yearn for new and intense experiences to negate boredom.

Some people find love to be the most difficult task they will ever encounter in their lifetime. Humans have conquered science, art, math, but we can’t establish a connection with the ever elusive theory of love. So, what is love? Webster’s dictionary defines love as “A strong affection for another arising out of kinship or personal ties”. That definition seems too mono-tone for my taste, and the best definition I came across was from an 8 year old child. “Love is when you kiss all the time. Then when you get tired of kissing you still want to be together, and you talk more. My Mommy and Daddy are like that. They look gross when they kiss” – Emily. Finding that most people try to comprehend love from an emotional perspective, I want to dissect love from a scientific point of view.

Research has shown that human interaction is 55% body language; 38% tone and speed of voice; and only 7% is through what we actually say! In essence, stand or sit up straight; make eye contact; slow down your speech; speak from the diaphragm; and shut up and listen to the other person.

Hello all, and welcome to Meat in Your Mouth. This blog was created by two co-workers in the water delivery business, after they realized that their everyday conversations through their walkie-talkies was so witty and funny that they had to make other people aware of their misadventures through the radio waves.

At the moment, MiYM Blog is what it is–a blog. We are currently developing a podcast to let our listeners HEAR what we hear and get a better idea of what the ridiculously insane words that come out of our mouths actually sound like.

We appreciate your patience as we get the future in comedy podcasting and blogging rolling. Please feel free to comment on anything at all and make sure to check the site weekly for our polls.

Thank you again for visiting MiYM and we hope to hear from you all very soon.
