After that fateful day in 1994, when one of rock’s most recognizable figures decided to end his own life, what happened to the remaining members of a band that was on top of the world?

So the lead singer of your immensely popular band decides to off himself.  What do you do?  How about start a new band.  Or maybe get into politics.  That’s what these two guys did.

Krist Novoselic, the bassist, despite his obvious musical talent, decided to get into politics after many years trying to cut it in the music industry under different names including his first project after Nirvana, Sweet 75.  Later on, he started the No WTO Combo, which consisted of his Sweet 75 bandmate Gina Mainwal, former Dead Kennedys drumer, Jello Biafra, Soundgarden guitarist, Kim Thayil and Novoselic himself.  Surprisingly, given the all-star roster, that didn’t work out either.  A few other musical acts and even “Director” of a pseudo-documentary, rounds out Novoselic’s career in the entertainment industry.

Novoselic now focuses mainly on politics in Washington state where he is a board member of FairVote, a non-profit organization that supports a constitutionally protected right to vote, universal voter registration, a national popular vote for president, instant runoff voting and proportional representation.

As for Dave Grohl, he did go on to pursue his own music career in the form of Foo Fighters, a globally recognized label when it comes to Rock.  Naturally, since Grohl already had songs written and recorded by the time Kurt passed away, he put together the Foos comprised of ex-Sunny Day Real Estate band members Nate Mendel and William Goldsmith, and Nirvana’s tour guitarist, Pat Smear, which I, personally, have had the pleasure of meeting.

Along the way in becoming the mega-band they are now, Grohl did have trouble along the way.  He replaced his first drummer for drummer-extraordinaire, Taylor Hawkins, who came to them from Alanis Morissette‘s band.  Pat Smear left the band after their second album, The Color and The Shape, which bread the very well known, Everlong.  The band replaced their guitarist twice before ending up with Chris Shiflet, who has been with the band for a good time now.

On the side, Dave has contributed his musical talents to other projects such as films(composed Soundtrack for the film Touch[1997]), other bands like Killing Joke, Queens of the Stone Age, Tenacious D, and Them Crooked Vultures, and even produced his own dream compilation of his own music, guest starring the older generation of metal on lyrics, called Probot.

Dave now resides in Los Angeles, with his wife and daughter Violet, and despite rumors of a retirement, Dave continues to make music, contributing to the soundtrack for what he calls life.
